Surprisingly, the Minnesota Timberwolves were awarded the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. With Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and last year’s lottery pick Jarrett Culver in the fold, this team could make a playoff run. What should the Timberwolves do with the first overall pick?
What Should the Timberwolves Do with the First Pick?
Draft Options
Most likely, instead of trading for a star, the Minnesota Timberwolves will keep the pick and build on their young roster. The Timberwolves have plenty of options to choose from. There are a few players that should be on their radar:
LaMelo Ball
LaMelo Ball is the top-rated point guard of this draft. The Timberwolves need a point guard who can create for others and create plays off of the dribble. His size (6’7) and skills at the point guard position are perfect for today’s league. Ball can take the pressure off of Russell to create and play defense.
Deni Avdija
Deni Avdija is a wing player the Timberwolves could use. If he develops more, Avdjia could give them scoring at all three levels. Coming from Israel, he makes for an interesting prospect. He can play defense and has a good motor.
Anthony Edwards
Anthony Edwards is considered to be the best overall prospect in this year’s draft. The Timberwolves could select him off of that premise alone. Edwards doesn’t fix their bigger needs but he does bring natural scoring ability and the potential of being a lockdown defender.
Trade Options
The number one overall pick is very coveted in any draft. The Timberwolves could be in the market for a veteran player. They have a good core already. Adding a vet to help the team mature would do wonders. The Timberwolves should seek a quality point guard or a wing player. Landing another player who can contribute right away will increase their chances of being a playoff team.
