The Golden State Warriors were awarded the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Many would say “the rich got richer” when it comes to them. Not only do they have the second overall pick, but stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson will return from injury. At full health, this franchise has the capability to return to NBA Finals glory. What should they do with the second pick?
What Should the Warriors with the Second Pick?
Draft James Wiseman
The Warriors may not even need the pick given their current roster, but acquiring new talent wouldn’t hurt. If they keep the pick, they should draft James Wiseman. Wiseman is a 7-foot center, who, despite only playing 12 games at Memphis, he is one of the top five talents in this year’s draft. Wiseman would solve the Warriors’ frontcourt issues. Also, learning behind Curry, Thompson, and Draymond Green would help with maturation.
Trade Down in the Draft
This year’s draft is projected to be deeper than in the past few years. Trading down in the draft should be an option that the Warriors consider. The New York Knicks could be a trade partner. They hold the eighth and twenty-seventh pick this year. The Knicks would love to have a top-five selection. Right now, they are out of the running for the players they covet and might be willing to part with a young star and picks in order for the second pick. Another trading partner could be the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls are in the midst of changing their franchise. They could start unloading some of their many young players, such as Lauri Markkanen.
Trade the Pick for a Star Player
The Golden State Warriors are in win-now mode. There are teams who are willing to deal their star player if they get a top pick in return. The Warriors could use that to land another star player. They should be on the hunt for a frontcourt player who can rebound and space the floor. Landing another star would complete them even if it is short term.
